Bucharest is perfectly placed for day trips: you can be in the mountains, in medieval towns, or by a lake without planning a whole vacation. We chose these stops for variety (city vs. nature vs. castles) and for how doable they are from Bucharest.
We also focused on the big classics you asked for—Snagov, Sinaia and Peleș Castle, Brașov, and the Transfăgărășan road in summer—then added a couple more that work well if you want a full, not-too-rushed day.
1. Snagov Monastery & Snagov Lake – Near Bucharest

What to do: visit the Snagov Monastery (mănăstire), then spend time around the lakeside. In warmer months, people often go by boat for that “monastery-from-the-water” feeling, and you’ll see locals doing quiet birdwatching.
How to get there: by car it’s usually around 40–70 minutes depending on traffic. By train, take a suburban/commuter option toward Snagov (journey is typically ~40–60 minutes), then do the last stretch on foot or by local transport.
Good to know: If you want the boat/landing experience, go during daylight and plan a bit of buffer for weather and waiting time.
