7 Unique Spots for The Best Appeltaart in Amsterdam (Chef’s Picks)

best apple pie amsterdam

If you’re on a mission to find the best apple tart in Amsterdam, we – Andra and Vienna (a local dutch chef) – are here to help you out.

We tried the best places around town, recommended by dutch locals, and we’ll share them with you.

In the Netherlands, baking apple pie – aka “Appeltaart” in dutch –  is perhaps the most home-baked dessert recipe.

Dutch apple tart/pie is like nothing else you tasted and is very different from the American or the French version.

With the dutch version, you get a crumbly topping of dough on top made of butter, flour, and sugar baked in a delicious crunchy yet crumbly twist.

In this article, we looked for authenticity, delicious taste, the freshness of the ingredients, and the price-value ratio.

Let’s jump into it. Here are our favorite picks.

1. Back to Black (Best Apple Tart in Amsterdam)

back to black outside

Back to Black is one of Amsterdam’s coziest and top-ranked coffee places.

They have multiple locations across town, but the one we recommend for the best apple pie is the one on Weteringstraat 48.

They bake their apple pie fresh the night before and freeze it immediately to make sure it stays fresh for the next day.

They unfreeze the whole pies one by one to ensure each client has the freshest slice.

It is served cold, but this is really the best way to serve it. Everything is melting in your mouth.

The taste is divine, with chunky bits of apple and a deliciously, caramelized, buttery crunchy base.

The portion size is generous so you can comfortably share it.

For only 4.3 euros you get a big slice of apple pie that you can easily share with your date.

2. Patisserie Kuyt

Patisserie Kuyt on Utrechtsestraat is a place you shouldn’t miss as it’s one of the best patisseries in Amsterdam.

It’s more on the expensive side, but their pastries and cakes are totally worth it.

They serve apple tarts in a more interesting shape than you’re used to; it doesn’t look like the traditional deep dish dutch pie, but the taste is authentic.

It’s served in a bite-friendly squared shape slice.

At Kuyt, you can find a wide selection of whole cakes you can buy for special occasions.

3. De Koffieschenkerij

At De Koffieschenkerij (translated to “coffee gift shop”) you can serve coffee & cakes in a former church compound, with a cozy interior, and a cute garden terrace.

The place is a hidden gem located in the Red Light district.

The apple pie is simply delicious, with a savory filling with super soft and juicy apple slices. It is a cozy place, warm and usually quiet, where you can relax your mind and enjoy delicious pastries.

Fun fact: if you serve hot chocolate there, know that it’s made with chocolate from Tony Chocolonely.

4. The Papeneiland Café

A cute and cozy spot with plenty of fabulous pastry options is The Papeneiland Cafe.

Located on Prinsengracht street, you’ll have a gorgeous canal view where you can really feel the city vibe while you’re enjoying your food.

Their apple pie is homemade and it’s simply delicious, crusty on the outside with a fluffy and generous fall-spiced apple filling.

Bill Clinton visited Papeneiland and ordered a slice of pie and a coffee. He loved the taste so much that he bought a whole pie for himself and then wrote a letter to the owners to thank them for the delicious treat.

At around 4 euros, you get a generous slice you can enjoy.

5. Patisserie Holtkamp

The Patisserie Holtkamp is impressive to visit, located in a building on the Vijzelgrachtwith with a gorgeous and elegant old-style interior that hasn’t changed since 1928.

They serve scrumptious pastries, cakes, and croquettes made to remember.

It was founded by Cees Holtkamp, a renowned dutch pastry chef, together with his wife.

Everything served there is high quality and the prices are just right, even if they are on the higher side, it’s worth it.

6. Koffiehuis de Hoek

If you’re looking for a classic homemade dutch apple pie, then Koffiehuis de Hoek won’t disappoint.

Located in Prinsengracht, in a very central area, you’ll find here a homemade apple pie that is delicious and doesn’t disappoint.

The cream on the side is also excellent, not so sweet, so it’s worth adding it to the bill. Simplicity is key here and the quality is very good: not too sweet, not too heavy, just perfect.

The portions are not so big, and a slice of pie is € 4.90 without whipped cream, which I find to be a bit too expensive for what you get. But nevertheless, if you’re in the area – it’s worth a try if you’re looking for a classic pie.

The service was a bit slow and not the best.

7. Winkel 43

winkel apple tart honest review

If you google “best apple tart in Amsterdam” you’ll most likely find Winkel 43 as the number 1 result as it is an all-time favorite.

The place is located in a very cute corner in one of the coziest neighborhoods of Amsterdam, in Jordaan.

The view is beautiful, especially if you stay on the terrace: you can enjoy your apple tart and do some people-watching.

Their apple pie is good but not spectacular. It’s very overrated in my opinion.

I found it to be a bit average compared to the rest on this list. The portion size is generous, and it’s served with whipped cream if you ask for it.

The pie is still warm, not so sweet but a bit bland.

The combination of warm pie + cold cream can get a bit gross on the plate. Some love it, some hate it.

Expect huge queue lines and even 30 minutes waiting time if there are lots of people waiting there. During summer, you can avoid it if you come around 9:30 in the morning.

The service was a bit disappointing and felt rushed, but considering the number of clients, it’s understandable.

It’s not the cleanest place as well and the toilets could need some cleaning.

Needed to ask for another spoon, as the one it came with was very dirty.
